Meera Nandan who came in for much praise for her debut role in ‘Vaalmiki’, has been signed on to play the heroine in a movie titled ‘Suriya Nagaram’, that is set in Madurai.

Rahul of ‘Moscowin Kaveri’ fame is paired opposite her. The movie is directed by Chellamuthu, who was previously an assistant to directors like Keyaar, P Vasu and R V Udhayakumar.

Speaking about the film, he says, “it is a poignant, romantic tale set against the backdrop of Madurai, known as the 'city that never sleeps'. Unlike other films made in and around the city, ‘Suriya Nagaram’ will capture its hitherto unseen and unexplored areas.”

Bringing cheer to her fans, Kavya Madhavan has finally decided to make a comeback with veteran director Joshi's forthcoming Malayalam film Christian Brothers which has four superstars: Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi, Dileep and Tamil action hero Arjun.

Kavya Madhavan will pair up with Mohanlal in this film, which will have Padmapriya as Mohanlal’s sister. Mohanlal plays a Godfather type of role with Suresh Gopi and Dileep playing his brothers. Arjun will play a pivotal role, which is yet to be announced.

Known for movies like Naivedhyam and Cycle, popular Malayalam actress Bhama has been signed to act in a Kannada movie, Modala Sala. Director Purushotham, who was searching for a homely-looking girl for the lead role,finalised the heroine only last week.

“Bhama is a well-known actress from the Malayalam film industry and has charmed fans with her cute looks and expressions. She can portray both comic and serious roles with equal finesse. Our team is happy because she is perfect for the role,” says Purushotham.

The film, which also stars Rocky Yash, is all set to go on floors today in the City and then move to Coorg for further shooting. This is not only Bhama’s first Kannada movie, but it is also her first visit to the City.

Bhama who has worked in Tamil and Malayalam movies says, “Ever since I started acting I always wanted to work in a Kannada film. I have seen so many Kannada films and believe that they have given the film industry some very valuable movies. When Purushotham sir came to me with this film, I really liked the script, plus the character suits my personality.”

Not knowing the language is not a problem for Bhama, but she plans to learn the
language in the course of working in the film.

Kerala tourism industry is all set to produce a multi-lingual feature film promoting the locales of the state.

An Indo-Italian collaboration, `In love with Kerala' is a romantic movie set in the backdrop of tourist resorts and locations in Kerala and Italy. The entire movie financed by the private tourism industry and NRIs will feature around 15 resorts spread across the length of Kerala. The venture is also supported by Kerala Tourism Department.

The major tourist destinations like Kovalam, Poovar, Varkala, Kollam beach, Kumarakom, Alappuzha, Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, Vagamon, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Bakel etc will appear in the movie. Kerala icons like houseboats, tree houses, various art forms, culture, cuisine etc will be highlighted in the film. This is the first time a movie promoting the tourism destinations is made in India. Countries like New Zealand, Tunisia etc have guided tours of movie locations of films Lord of the Rings and Star Wars.

The film is about an Italian painter coming to Kerala to recreate the magic of the works of famous painter Raja Ravi Varma and falling in love with a Kerala model. Anish J Karrinad, director and co-scriptwriter of the movie told ET that the film would be released in English and Malayalam by March 2010. It would also be dubbed in German, Italian and other languages later.

The movie to be jointly produced by Global Movie Makers comprising NRIs and Italians and Kerala-based Tourism Movie Makers will be shot entirely in Kerala and Italy. The Italian destinations Rome, Venice and Capri Island will also be shown in the film. The expected budget is Rs 5 to 6 crore.

Italian actor Vincenzo Bocciarelli is the hero of the movie which will have popular southern movie actress Mamta Mohandas as heroine. The film will feature other actors and technicians from Mollywood. Three days after director Adoor Gopalakrishnan's one woman and two men swept the state film awards, veteran Malayalam filmmaker T.V. Chandran Friday said that the awards were given to a "TV serial and not a movie".
"This time the award for the best film has been given to a TV serial and not a film. Last year his film was not given an award because the then jury felt his film was a serial," Chandran told reporters here.
Chandran's Bhoomi Malayalam was adjudged the second best by the jury this time.
"Adoor says that this year's jury was good but not last year's. When he gets an award, he says the jury is good and if he doesn't he says the jury is bad. Is this a statement which one expects from a person like Adoor," asked Chandran.
Adoor bagged the best director, best film and best screenplay award for one woman and two men. While Praveena won the second best actress award for her performance in the film and the best sound recordist trophy also went to "one woman and two men".
Reacting to the criticism, Culture Minister M.A. Baby said: "Any creative criticism is welcome... whosoever has raised this is free to carry such feelings."
Commenting on the same Adoor said that those who think his film is a television serial is "ignorant of what a TV serial is and what a film is".
"You know that my film, which was sent for last year's award, has been screened at 40 international venues," added Adoor.
One of the jury member Priyanandan says Chandran has criticised the selection procedure because he has seen only his film.
"We saw 27 films which came for the awards and then we made the selection," said Priyanandan

The latest film from director Lal Jose - 'Mulla ' cannot perhaps be cosidered as his best on. After such critically appreciated movies like 'Arabikkatha' and 'Classmates', one expect a lot more from the director who gave us path breaking hits, even with lesser stars. An average film that may not make much of an impact at the box office, that's what 'Mulla', is. Though a colorful film that is entertaining at times, 'Mulla' falters on many counts, being too far from an engrossing stuff and is perhaps indicative that Lal Jose and Sindhu Raj failed miserably this time, trying to give a long elusive hit to Dileep.

Movie takes us to the colony, a settlement of thieves, sex workers and goondas. Here we have got every representative from a microcosmic colony ranging from the reigning goonda gang headed by Mathew to Sasi, the pimp and manager to the sex workers. Lal Jose tries hard to layer the story with issues ranging from human trafficking to parent less rearing of children who ultimately become criminals.

Actress, named after his mother who was a silent sex worker known by her smile and bunch of jasmine in her hair, grows up as an orphan following the suicide of his mother. Thereafter he becomes a dumb left arm to Thampi Annan.

Hero immediately hands over the child to Lalchi, a girl who is a regular traveler in the train. Lalchi, working in bakery, on the other hand, has her share of problems, and after a day returns the child to Mulla in the colony. With nothing else to do Mulla and his men plans to rear the child. Lalchi, who is a bold, smart and outgoing girl, becomes a regular visitor to the dreaded colony to take care of the child which gradually paves way for a romance with Mulla.

The writer seems to have followed the Balu Mahendra’s classic ‘Yathra’ or its Hindi version ‘Milan’ in the narrative style and the film even showcases some shades of 'Dhalapathy'. The problem with the movie is that after establishing the premises, whose majority is shot on the moving train, the later half falls too predicable, even though not clichéd. The film would have come in for less criticism, had it been from a less accomplished director.

The best part of the film is the excellent camera work by Vipin Mohan, who has beautifully covered the entire proceedings, a work that will match the best of his career. And that is the case with the art director Gokuldas who has taken pains to display the best from his team, creating the sets of the colony. . What saves this film is the cast that has given noteworthy performances. Dileep is good as Mulla, though not extraordinary. But the decision to keep him with very limited dialogues definitely did backfired, as the actor without much easy talking had always been less effective. Meera Nandhan as Lalchi proves herself in her first outing and is the surprise packages who carry the film in her tender shoulders. Biju Menon, with his towering personality and evocative eyes, looks every part the enigmatic ring leader. Anoop Chandran, Reena Basheer, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Salim Kumar, excel in the supporting roles with well timed comedies while Saiju Kurup takes a mature look as C.I. Bharathan. Bhavana too makes an appearance in a wasted and overly done cameo.

Though a two-heroine film, it is said that Valmiki has enough space for Meera to prove her acting skills in Tamil.

Music director Ilayaraja recently launched the audio of Valmiki at Satyam Cinemas along with director Shankar. Touted to be a clean love story, the film has already attracted public attention for its unique title.

As per director, the film has been named after sage Valmiki, for he found the name catchy and also, there is a similarity between the sage and the protagonist of his film, Poonakann Pandi. Valmiki enriched society by giving it a very grand epic, Ramayan and in this film, protagonist Poonakann Pandi too contributes immensely to society. The story is based on that contribution by this protagonist. Valmiki is produced by Vikatan Talkies.

After Bhavana, Kavya and Meera, here comes another Meera from Mollywood to join the race to rule the Kollywood tinseldom. Meera Nandan, who recently made her debut in films with the Lal Jose-directed Malayalam film Mulla, is all set to make her bid at conquering hearts in Kollywood too.

Meera, who is a television anchor and had also sung in four music albums including one in Tamil named Esha, marks her beginning in Tamil with Vaalmigi, directed by Anandha Narayanan and produced under the banner of Vikatan Talkies.

Meera , who is being paired in Vaalmigi opposite Kaloori fame Akhil, is delighted to work with the huge banner in her debut Tamil film, and is readying herself to get adapted to shooting schedules here. Let's hope that this 17-year old Kerala girl makes it big in Kollywood, much like her predecessors Nayanthara, Meera Jasmine, Asin, Bhavana and Jothirmayi.

Mulla - a big flop

If director determined the fate of a film, then Mulla would have been one of the biggest hits of Dileep's career.

The sarcasm is intended as the actor is known for his fetish for experimenting with his looks in every other film, so also in his latest film directed by his friend Lal Jose, which is the most daring as it is not a makeup gimmick.

He has come up with a bald pate and clean shaven face in the title role of a goon who has no qualms about taking lives or limbs.

Story is predictable: the transformation of Mulla (Dileep) from a sharp weapon wielding goon to a softie who can change nappies (reluctantly at first) and clean up a baby's back side under the influence of a sweet and angelic Lachchi (debutant Meera Nandan).

Story by Sindhuraj is not that simple. In the beginning it seems somewhat interesting as the story is revealed through flashbacks (maybe a hangover of Classmates to complicate the narrative). But, it does not hold our attention for long as we can guess things taking shape and in what direction they are moving.

Interesting thing first, which is Dileep's character as almost dumb and brooding angry young man. He is robbed of the vital ingredient of histrionic armoury that is, to provide comic relief with his antics. The son of a prostitute nicknamed Mulla, (named after jasmine flowers she wears in her hair), he later gets her name after she commits suicide. He is then brought up in a slum that breeds criminals.

Meera tries her best to be charming as the best of Malayalam cinema did before her. But she will need to spruce up a little before she gets noticed by Tamil filmmakers (which are what all Malayalam actresses aim at these days). Still she is good enough to fit the bill here.
Lal Jose does a fine job by shooting major portion of the film on a real train. He is the only director who makes us forget that Malayalam film industry is in financial trouble as far as the production values go.

We wish he is cautious in selecting the subject he deals with. And, that he should stop using crass language and innuendoes to please the so-called front-benchers.
Technically, the effort put behind this film is top notch. Camerawork by Vipin Mohan and art direction by Gokul Das are praise worthy.

Supporting cast goes; the ubiquitous Salim Kumar, Anoop Chandran and Suraj Venjaramoodu are all there. Another Lal Jose favourite Biju Menon does not get sidelined as Mulla's mentor and the uncrowned ruler of the slum. Young Shaiju Kurup does get noticed as villainous police officer.

If we see Mulla as a Dileep film, we can take heart that it is one of his better efforts than July 4 and Calcutta News, and a bit more cohesive than Risikan.

But Mulla may be one of the worst films of Lal Jose in his decade old career. Yes, this from the man who gave us Meesa Madhavan , Classmates, Achanurangatha Veedu and Arabikkadha.

No glamour please- Says Meera

Malayalam actress, Meera, who has acted in Mulla, a Malayalam film, was picked by director Anantha Narayanan to play the role of Vandana in Valmiki.

" I'll act if I get roles like the role of Vandana in Valmiki or Lachi in Mulla. If I continue to get such roles, I'll continue to act. Else, I'll have to think a bit," the actress, who has just finished school and is looking to join college, says.

"Actually, I never had any intention of acting in Tamil movies. But the story of Valmiki, my role in the story and the technicians associated with it impressed me so much that I accepted to play the role," she adds. "Also, my figure does not suit glamorous roles," she points out with a smile.

Early era

The first cinema theatre in Kerala was established in Trichur by K.W.Joseph in 1907 and it had a manually operated film projector. The first electrically operated film projector too was established in Trichur by Jose Kattukkaran in 1913 and was called the 'Jose Electrical Bioscope'.

The first Malayalam film, titled "news", was released in 1928. It was a silent film, produced and directed by a businessman with no prior film experience, J. C. Daniel. The second film ,Marthanda Varma, based on a novel by C. V. Raman Pillai, was produced in 1933. However, its release was limited due to legal disputes surrounding use of Pillai's material.

"Boy", released in 1938, was the first "talkie" in Malayalam. Its screenplay and songs were written by Muthukulam Raghavan Pillai and directed by S. Nottani.

1960s

Ramu , the director of "Blue Bird" went on to become a celebrated director in the 1960s and 1970's. P. Bhaskaran also directed a few acclaimed films in the 1960s. The cameraman of "Blue Bird", A. Vincent also became a noted director of the 1960s and 1970's. Notable films of this decade include "from river", "guest house" (1964), "prawn" (1965), "girl friend" (1965) and "darkness" (1966).

1970-90s

The 70s saw the emergence of a new wave of cinema in Malayalam. The growth of film society movement in Kerala introduced the works of the French and Italian New Wave directors to the discerning Malayali film enthusiasts. Adoor Gopalakrishnan's first film "marriage" (1972) brought Malayalam cinema to the international film arena. In 1973 M. T. Vasudevan Nair who was by then recognized as an important author in Malayalam, directed his first film "flower", which won the President's Gold Medal for the best film.

Present

Cinema in Kerala have seen a real comeback in 2005. New directors such as Lal Jose, Roshan Andrews, Blessy and Anwar Rasheed brought back original scripts to Malayalam movie. Notable movies of this era are Udayananu Tharam, Note Book, Classmates, Kazhcha, Keerthi Chakra, Vinoda Yatra, Rasa thanthram, Arabi Kadha, Kadha Paryumbol, and about 50 percentage of Malayalam movies are remade into other languages. This era has seen new promising actors like Dileep Prithviraj, Meera Nandan, and Kavya Madhavan along with stalwarts Mammooty and Mohanlal.

How did first film happen?

I was acting in television programmes on Asianet, Amritha and Jeevan. One day out of the blue, Poornima wife of actor Indrajeet , called me up and asked if I was interested to do films. Director Lal Jose was looking for a new face with a girl-next-door looks and Poornima thought that I fitted the bill. I discussed with my parents and decided to go ahead and do the film.

How do you feel now?

Today was my last exam for CBSE 12th and naturally I have to be happy and relieved. But I am tensed and don’t think I will be able to sleep till I hear the verdict about Mulla and my performance. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Can you teel the experience of working with Lal Jose and the Mulla team?

(Smiles) I met Lal Jose and he insisted that I do a screen test, after which I was selected. I was so nervous to work with veterans like Dileep chettan, cameraman Vipin Mohan sir and others, but trust me they all made me comfortable and slowly we all were like members of the same family.

What is your role in Mulla ?

I play Lachi a bold, smart and outgoing girl who interesting in painting, doing icing on cakes and is a good singer. I really enjoyed the shoots and I think that it is a dream debut for any newcomer.

what are your next career moves?

I want to do good films in both Malayalam and Tamil but continue with my studies till I get a degree. I have signed a Tamil film with a newcomer for Ananda Vikatan films. Talks are on for a few other projects but I am waiting for the box-office results of Mulla before I make any further moves.
